We engaged storytelling, movement, music, and installations to tell the stories of the Indigenous and Black communities often erased from nature spaces. In collaboration with storytellers and visual artists Tchin and Emma White Thunder, MC and dancer Crux, we guided audiences through the watershed of the Schuylkill River upon which The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education lives.
Along the path, cement moccasins conjure the ghosts of the Indigenous school children buried in mass graves across North America. Our movement, and stories honor the spirits of those who first occupied the land, and those who escaped and found refuge in the woods. This family-oriented performance invites audiences members to consider the relationship between the #BlackLivesMatter and WATERisLIFE movements while immersed in the beauty of the woods.
